The PrivaComm Server (PCS) is the core of the PrivaComm
Virtual Private Network (VPN). It manages the established VPN and
provides control over the users. Designed for low bandwidth demand,
the PCS has minimal hardware requirements.
Network Security
Serving as the center-point of the PrivaComm VPN, the PCS maintains the
base security and authentication levels for the VPN users.
Before a PrivaComm user can access and participate in the VPN, he/she must
authenticate with the PCS. Non authenticated intruders are promptly
terminated and disallowed.
Email Services
The PCS serves as the Email Server for the PrivaComm VPN. Naturally,
users need to send email to offline users., hence, the PCS holds the email
until the recipient/s connect and then downloads the email.
VPN Management
The PCS manages the "Who's who" and "What's what" of
the PrivaComm VPN. For this purpose, the PCS maintains the user
database containing the users, their authorization levels and other
security related 'per user' settings.
Minimal Hardware Required
The PCS software can be placed on generic (often low-end) PCs using any of
the MS-Windows operating systems beyond Windows95. Though we
recommend that the PCS reside on a dedicated machine, the required machine
can actually be quite small. Naturally, you'll want to mount the PCS
on a hardware platform that ensures the best level of performance for the
amount of Users.
Bandwidth vs Performance
Network software performance is often regulated by the bandwidth of its
network. And, the same is true for the PCS software.
Nevertheless, if your organization has a dedicated internet connection (of
any sort), you shouldn't have any problem delivering the meager bandwidth
requirements of the PCS.
